Our Preventive Approach
Prevention of oral cancer is our mantra. Stopping the disease before it starts requires a scientific approach to both public awareness and individual lifestyle changes. We advocate regular oral screenings by oral health experts skilled in detecting early signs of cancerous lesions. We believe prevention of cancer is best achieved by education in tandem with behavior modification and adjustments to lifestyle. Our early detection experts work closely with high-risk individuals – such as heavy tobacco and alcohol users – to change behaviors known to cause oral cancer.
Our Diagnostic Approach
Oral cancer is very treatable if it’s caught early. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of oral cancer or how to detect it. Our experts are highly specialized and experienced at diagnosing cancers of the oral cavity and in determining the progression stage. We have seen all the common cancers as well as extremely rare versions. Diagnosis of an oral cancer requires advanced imaging studies, biopsies, and an in-depth personal history of your health and habits.
Our Treatment Approach
We embrace a multidisciplinary team approach that ensures the most advanced treatment currently available for precancers and cancers that occur in the mouth, lips, gums, cheeks, tongue, soft palate, mouth floor and the salivary glands. Our specialists include: head and neck oncologic surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, oral medicine specialists, periodontists, maxillofacial prosthodontists, psychologists, nutrition specialists, speech pathologists, social workers, and spiritual counselors.
Having received a diagnosis of cancer brings a profound shift in spiritual and existential awareness. At the NYU Oral Cancer Center, we offer cancer treatment in combination with psychotherapy and teach different behavioral approaches such as meditation or stress reduction. With this unique approach we can turn around our patients’ feeling of hopelessness and improve their quality of life.
Your relationship with NYU Oral Cancer Center begins in the state-of-art facility at the Bluestone Center of Clinical Research. The entire second floor is devoted to our oral cancer and precancer patients. Typically all clinical procedures (such as consultations, biopsies and minor surgeries) are performed at our second-floor surgical suites, although cancer surgeries and complex reconstructive cases are generally performed at the NYU Langone Medical Center.
We are located in the Gramercy Park area of Manhattan at 421 First Avenue, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10010-4086. Contact us online or by calling 212-998-9835.
